Elidel cream for external use 10 mg/g, 15 g in tubes

Elidel (generic name: pimecrolimus) is used to reduce skin inflammation caused by the type of eczema called atopic dermatitis. It is usually prescribed for people who have not responded to other eczema medications such as topical steroids, or who are allergic to steroids. 

It may also be prescribed to treat the condition known as vitiligo, where areas of the skin lose their natural color as a result of an autoimmune process that destroys the melanin-producing cells.

It works by blocking the production of inflammatory chemicals called cytokines, produced by white blood cells as part of the body’s immune response to allergy or irritation. Cytokines are part of a cascade of events in the skin that results in the irritated area becoming inflamed – red, swollen and itchy. Elidel stops the white blood cells in the skin from producing cytokines and so reduces inflammation.

Serious side effects from Elidel are rare. However, if a sudden allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), such as swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, makes it difficult to breathe or swallow, or if wheezing, hives, rash, or sloughing of the skin occurs, call a doctor or 911 right away, or go to an emergency room immediately.

Common side effects that should clear up within a few days include mild burning or irritation at the site where the cream was applied. Mild headaches may also occur.
